34th Annual “A Mind Is…”® Gala – Houston was Immaculate

(Houston, TX) The 2023 UNCF Houston Gala was held at the Hilton Americas Houston. This is one of the biggest fundraising events for the UNCF which assists college students with funding to HBCUs. The night was filled with electricity. The Master of Ceremony, Khambral Marshall from KPRC 2 Houston was energetic and very funny. The co-chairs for the gala were Erica Littlejohn, Burnette, Esq., and Brandi Carson. Together they created a beautiful event and raised over $700K. The South Texas Area Development Director, UNCF, Zarinah K. Poole spoke very highly of these ladies and the board of directors. Zarinah made you want to be a part of the UNCF. Miss UNCF, was from HBCU Huston-Tillotson in Austin, TX. From the opening prayer to the talent of the night, DJ DNice, it was a night to remember.

Before you entered the ballroom, they had vendors set up in the lobby. I had the pleasure of stopping by the cigar vendor, Red's Smoke Shop based out of Austin, TX. The owners were nice and I was able to see how cigars are made.

Once you entered the ballroom, you felt the theme for the gala, Havana Nights. The colorful tablecloths and flower arrangements added the pops of color that spoke to the overall theme. The food was prepared by Executive Chef, Ruffy Sulaiman. He has prepared the food for the UNCF Gala for the past 12 years. Needless to say, the food was amazing.

We all know that a gala is nothing without music. During the pandemic, DJ DNice went live every day to bring joy to millions of people around the world. DNice provided music for all ages and helped us dance the night away. This was the perfect end to a perfect night. UNCF's motto is "A mind is a terrible thing to waste".

Thank you to everyone who came out to support and continue to provide support for this wonderful organization.
